Common Ground Sanctuary

Common Ground Sanctuary has integrated peer mentors into all aspects of the agency's youth service delivery system. Peer mentors work as youth care workers in the shelter, facilitate groups, assist in the delivery of substance abuse prevention and education, conduct intakes, provide client supervision, answer the 24-hour crisis telephone line, perform outreach in the community as part of a theater troupe, provide individual care to youth whose families are receiving in-home counseling, and serve on a staff advisory committee to the agency management. In partnership with adult professionals, peer mentors make a valuable contribution to the agencey's understanding of what. It is an opportunity to help them while helping their peers. Mentors volunteer three to four hours each week during day, evening and weekend hours and are expected to make a one year commitment.
