At the Barnabas Youth Opportunities center, we believe that a mentoring relationship within an environment of a caring, sensitive and supportive community is the best way to provide young people with role models and the personal attention they need to learn and grow into responsible adults.
The mission of the Barnabas Youth Opportunities center is a resource that encourages and promotes development of youth and other individuals within the community by creating positive, meaningful work, learning and recreational opportunities; to provide a positive image and service which leads to the development of strong social and individual responsibility as a deterent and alternative to crime, substance abuse and destructive behavior.
The Barnabas center began June 1, 1983 as a program of the Presbytery of Detroit to encourage and assist individuals to discover, prepare for and engage in meaningful and fulfilling work.
While most employment and training programs are directed toward "job-ready individuals, many young people are neglected because they need to be guided and encouraged through specific developmental stages before becoming employable.
