Share Our Strength's Cooking Matters, operated locally by Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan, promotes short- and long-term solutions to hunger and poverty in Southeastern Michigan through six-week hands-on courses.

Each class series focuses on specific themes such as menu planning, healthy snacking, and cooking with fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.  During each class, a registered dietician and a culinary professional work together as a teaching team to instruct participants on the principles of nutrition and healty cooking.

Participants in the class receive free cookbooks and free groceries as well as the skills, knowledge, and confidence to prepare healthy and affordable meals.

Also offered is Shopping Matters, a guided grocery store tour that shows low-income families how to get the most nutrition for their food dollars at the supermarket.  During the tour, participants learn information and practice skills that help them understand how to economically purchase fruits and vegetables, save money by comparing unit prices, and make healthier choices byreading food labels and ingredient lists.
