Faith Communities Coalition on Foster Care
The Faith Communities Coalition on Foster Care is a branch of the Save Our Children Coalition Project at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, a collaboration of organizations and community volunteers who work to support and enrich the lives of children and families in foster care. The Faith Communities Coalition on Foster Care is a major initiative of the Coalition’s outreach endeavors.
We seek to enlist faith based community support and work with congregations of all faiths throughout the metropolitan Detroit area. Our goal is to create a wider safety net to help recruit, support and contribute in large and small ways to the well-being of foster children and families.
Our fast-developing group consists of clergy, foster parents, adoptive parents, educators, pediatricians, social workers, lawyers, mentors, grant writers, a community organizer, business executives and a variety of volunteers. Members come from many denominations and faiths.
We seek to build relationships between faith communities, social service agencies and the legal system. An immediate goal is to enlist the help of 100 faith communities to promote May as Foster Care Month, 2010.
The ultimate goal is for each faith community to find a safe, stable environment for at least one foster child. If each of our faith communities here in the Detroit metropolitan area would sponsor just one foster child, our current crisis would be alleviated in two years.
Stephanie Ranney of the Faith Communities Coalition / Kirk of the Hills' Foster Care Ministry has created a slideshow that other congregatations are free to download and customize to their own needs as a useful communication tool for educating and encouraging members to make a difference for foster care youth.
