Program aimed at improving the nutritional status of low-income people by providing them with financial assistance to buy food (or seeds and plants to grow food) for home use. Aid is provided in the form of an electronic benefits transfer (EBT) card (Bridge Card) that is similar to a bank debit card. Monthly food benefit is added to account electronically. EBT cards are accepted by any retailer displaying the QUEST logo.
Adult members of families receiving food benefits are required to seek paid employment. (In rare cases, participation in educational programs, job training, parenting classes, or voluntary work in community service may be used to meet the FIP work requirement.) Recipients who need help in finding a job are referred to a local employment services agency for assistance through a "Work First" program.
Individuals, families, and groups of people who live together and purchase and prepare their food together, who are U.S. citizens or aliens lawfully admitted for permanent residence, and who meet income and asset guidelines, may be eligible.
Able-bodied adults ages 18-50 who are not caring for minor children are limited to 3 months of food stamp benefits within a 36 month period unless they (1) work 20 hours per week, averaged monthly or (2) participate in a work program for 20 hours a week or (3) volunteer for 25 hours a month community service with a non-profit organization.
Complete and submit application form (available by calling, writing, or visiting any MDHS County or District Office) to the MDHS County or District Office which serves area of residence. In cases of extreme emergency, referrals are made to food banks or soup kitchens while an application is being processed. Applications may also be filed at local Social Security Administration offices if the applicant and everyone who lives and eats with him/her is applying for or receiving SSI benefits.
