Family Skills Program

The Family Skills Program is a short-term, skill-building, home-based program. Families
who are eligible are invited to participate. The program uses the Strengthening Families
Curriculum, which is a 14-session, evidencebased parenting skills, children’s life skills, and
family skills training program involving parents and children, separately and together. Services are provided for a minimum of three months and consist of weekly home visits with all family members. Together, the Home Visit Clinician and the family will develop goals to increase family functioning and stability. Home Visit Clinicians are available to families 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in the event of an emergency.

Who is eligible?

Families who have a minimum of three risk factors as identified by program assessment can be referred from DHS and other community referral sources. Services are provided to families who reside in Southwest Detroit and Dearborn or in the following zip codes: 48209, 48210, 48216, 48217, 48226, 48120, 48121, 48123, 48124, 48126 and 48128.


What can a family expect during sessions?


You and your family will be treated with respect and dignity. The Home Visit Clinician will work with you on the goals you decide are important. The Family Skills Program believes parents should be supported in their efforts to care for their children.


The Family Skills Program connects your family with community resources. Program curriculum is geared specifically towards the ages of your child or children.  Sessions involve interactive, hands-on activities for parents and children.  Additional case management services as needed can include, but are not limited to, budgeting, communication skills, anger management, safety planning, parenting skills, discipline techniques, and issues
related to domestic violence, as well as other concrete needs.
